MetaMask Transaction History for Taxes: How to Export It

On this page
MetaMask does not have a button that exports your history as a CSV file. Its own support page says so, and points to the workaround: open your address in a block explorer such as Etherscan and use its CSV Export, once for every network you used. Most people skip that step and connect their wallet address to crypto tax software, which reads every supported chain at once. Never type your Secret Recovery Phrase anywhere to do this.
Why MetaMask has no export
MetaMask is a self-custody wallet. Your transactions are not stored by MetaMask; they are recorded on each blockchain. So the record of what you did lives on the explorer for each network: Etherscan for Ethereum, BaseScan for Base, Arbiscan for Arbitrum, and so on.
That has two consequences for taxes:
- One address, many histories. The same MetaMask address can hold activity on several networks. Each network needs its own export.
- No prices. Explorer files list what moved and when, but generally not the value in dollars at the time. Tax calculations need that value, which is why most people use software that adds historical prices.
Option 1: connect your address to tax software
- In MetaMask, copy your account address (it starts with
0x). Repeat for each account if you have several. - In your crypto tax tool, add a MetaMask or Ethereum / EVM wallet source and paste the address.
- Select the networks you used, if the tool asks.
- Let the import run, then review transactions it could not classify.
An address is public information: sharing it lets the tool read your history but never move your funds. Never enter your Secret Recovery Phrase or private key into a tax tool or any website. MetaMask's support page says the same.
MetaMask also has a Tax Hub in its support center, which works with a third-party tax provider. Check its current features and price on MetaMask's Tax Hub pages before you choose it over another tool.
Option 2: export CSV files from block explorers
These steps follow MetaMask's support article on downloading your transaction history for tax reporting.
- In MetaMask, open the menu (three dots) next to your account name.
- Choose View on Etherscan, or the explorer for the network you have selected.
- On the explorer page for your address, scroll to the bottom of the transaction list.
- Click CSV Export, choose the date range and download the file.
- Switch MetaMask to the next network you used and repeat on that network's explorer.
On most explorers, plain transactions, token transfers and NFT transfers are on separate tabs, each with its own CSV export. For a tax report, you usually need all of them: a token swap often shows up as a transaction (the gas fee) plus token transfers (the coins in and out).
What explorer CSVs leave out
| Missing | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Dollar value at the time | Gains and income are measured in your currency | Add historical prices, or let software do it |
| Context | A swap, a bridge and a transfer to yourself can look alike | Label each one, or use software that recognises protocols |
| Other networks | Each explorer covers one chain | Export each network separately |
| Some internal transactions | Some value moved by smart contracts appears only on the internal tab | Export the internal transactions tab too |
How MetaMask activity is taxed (US)
The IRS treats crypto as property, and a self-custody wallet changes nothing about that:
- Swaps in MetaMask (including MetaMask's built-in swap feature) are taxable: you dispose of one coin to get another (IRS FAQ Q64).
- Gas fees paid in ETH are a small disposal of ETH (Q97). Gas on a purchase or sale is a transaction cost that adjusts your basis or proceeds (Q53, Q56); gas for moving coins between your own wallets is not.
- Sending to your own exchange account is not a sale (Q81), but your software has to see both sides to know that.
- No 1099-DA. Activity in a self-custody wallet is not on any broker form. You still report it (Q108).
Since January 1, 2025, cost basis is tracked wallet by wallet. A coin's basis in MetaMask is not shared with the same coin on Coinbase, which makes clean transfer records between them more important. See the US crypto tax guide.
Check before you calculate
- Every network and every account in your MetaMask is included.
- Every transfer in has a source. ETH that arrived from Binance or Coinbase should match a withdrawal in that exchange's export.
- Bridges are paired. Funds leaving Ethereum and arriving on Base should show as one movement, not a sale and a separate income.
- Spam tokens are hidden. Wallets receive unsolicited tokens; mark them as spam in your tool rather than counting them as income.
- Balances match. Your software's balance per token should match what MetaMask shows.
Turn your wallet history into a tax report
With one network and a handful of transactions, explorer CSVs plus a price lookup can work. With several networks, DeFi protocols or bridges, software that reads your address directly is far less work and far less error-prone.
FAQ
Can I export MetaMask transactions to CSV?
Not from MetaMask itself. Its support page says it does not currently have a built-in feature to export transaction history as CSV or PDF. Use a block explorer's CSV Export for each network, or connect your address to tax software.
Is it safe to give my MetaMask address to tax software?
Your address is public and lets software read your history; it cannot move funds. Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase or private keys with anyone, including tax tools.
Are MetaMask swaps taxable?
In the US, yes. Swapping one token for another is a disposal of the token you gave up, so it is a capital gain or loss. The swap fee and gas count as transaction costs.
